What To Pack When Moving Into an Unfinished House

In a perfect world, when you move into a home, it’s ready for you and your loved ones. However, that’s not always the case. While some people may opt to stay in a hotel room or settle in with other relatives as temporary living arrangements, sometimes those options are off the table and you have to move into that unfinished house. There are plenty of ways for you to cope through this time, starting with what to pack to move in.

Start with essentials.

When it comes to settling into a new place, you’ll need to assess the overall situation. Be sure to pack changes of clothes to accommodate you and your loved ones until the remodel is complete. With pairs of denim jeggings, sneakers, and other basics, it’s important to have enough to tide you over for as long as you think. The good news is that even if you don’t have appliances like a washing machine and dryer in place, you can access a local laundromat for a proper machine wash.

In addition to basics in terms of clothing, be sure to pack the essential toiletries that you need throughout the entire process and create individual kits for each of your family members, checking the boxes for basic hygienic needs. Be sure to also consider just how much is available during a remodeling project, especially if the plumbing is temporarily shut down, impacting shower and toilet use.

Consider what’s being remodeled.

If you’re going through a remodel, be sure to consider the spaces around your new home. The last thing you want is for everything to devolve into chaos. Google something like “home remodeling in Minneapolis” to work with the best contractors who are good communicators throughout the project. With new construction, you want to make sure there are still zones of your house that are off-limits.

Consider what is a top priority during a remodel. If you won’t have access to your kitchen immediately, you may want to consider relying on electric appliances like microwaves and coffee makers to make sure that you can accommodate meals to some extent. Be sure to pack in accordance with what area is under renovation.

Keep yourself as comfortable as possible.

You may not be able to bring furniture into a living room or bedroom that is being renovated. However, you do need some temporary furniture. Consider an air mattress to set up for you and your loved ones to at least assure somewhere to lay their heads at the end of the day. You may want to temporarily relocate furniture, taking the couch out of the living room while the remodel occurs and using it as a bed for now.

Be sure to pack blankets and linens for extra comfort, as well as pillows for the bed. Scale back on pillows that are solely used for decor for now until the renovation of your unfinished house is complete. The last thing you want is for anything that complements the room to be damaged by repairs and fixes being made.

Don’t hesitate to explore.

Try to budget accordingly to settle in during a remodel. Work with your contractors on your schedule to know what days certain rooms are off-limits. For example, if you know that the electricity needs to be cut out for an extended amount of time, be sure to pack your chargers and head to a local cafe that offers charging stations and Wi-Fi access. Public libraries and leisure centers have outlets as well, or you could simply spend the day exploring your new neighborhood, looking at sale items and places where you can score additional discounts to find items that will truly make your new house a home.
