Rome, Italy
Much like Athens, the Roman Empire shaped the modern world, and much of its glory still resides in the city to this day. For starters, you should visit the Colosseum, which once stood as a packed amphitheater hosting gladiator fights. You should also spend some time in Vatican City, where you will find plenty of museums, sculptures, and beautiful architecture. Before you leave, you can’t forget to make a wish by the incredible Trevi Fountain, an eighteenth-century fountain that stands beautifully amid the bustle of the busy city.
Copenhagen, Denmark
If you’re a fan of exploring castles, then Copenhagen is your perfect city break destination. It is a little colder than some of the other European cities, but it does boast a fantastic selection of museums, art galleries, and gardens to wander through while soaking up the culture.
The Rosenburg Castle is particularly interesting, as it is home to the crown jewels and dates back to the seventeenth century. While you’re there, don’t forget to try the selection of delicious Denmark cuisine, including hotdogs, fishcakes, and pastries.
Saint Petersburg, Russia
Once known as Petrograd and then Leningrad, Saint Petersburg is steeped in Russian history. Named Russia’s cultural capital, the city has a wide range of art galleries and museums for you to peruse for days. Make sure you don’t miss the Church of the Saviour of Spilled Blood, a church with incredible architecture that was named after the murder of Alexander the Second.
The city is simply beautiful, and there is so much to see, including a vodka museum! Russia has a lot to offer, and Saint Petersburg will give you a large taste of that.
