Even before her launch to stardom, Cardi B has always been a controversial figure in the music industry. The so-called “Rap Queen” doesn’t shine from it and instead embraces it. Her musical success only further cements her points as being “in the right.”
But we shouldn’t gloss over all the controversial moments, and instead, look to open discourse. After all, musicians hold huge sway over their listeners and serve as inspiration. So the last thing you want is for your kid to look up to these people.
Even though we celebrate her musical talent, here are her most controversial moments that aren’t worth celebrating.
Openly Admitting Robbery
The very first viral controversy came in 2019 when Cardi B admitted in an Instagram-live rant about drugging and robbing men. While fans did know about her past, not everyone knew that Cardi B used to work as a stripper and a call girl. She worked at a bar where she would hang out and wait for men to approach her. In one particular case, she and a guy rented a room where she drugged him and took all his money.
While you might expect a big uproar from the community, the opposite happened. Cardi explained that she was in a “very bad” situation and that she did it so she could put food on the table. But not everyone was sympathetic to her tears. Part of the community openly demanded that she be punished, while others celebrated her as a hero. Dumbfounded as it sounds, there are far worse things a rapper can do to survive. We’ve all heard stories of rough upbringings, and many have served time for doing much worse things.
In her Twitter post, Cardi B said that she had “limited options,” and that she “never glorified the things she had done” in her music.
Throwing Her Shoes
It seems that Cardi B loves throwing shoes at people she doesn’t like. She’s done it numerous times in the past, and we can’t see a world where she stops anytime soon. The first time it happened was in 2019 at the New York Fashion Week. During an after-party, she got in a spat with fellow female rapper, Nicki Minaj. The two are probably the most influential female rappers, and it was only a matter of time before they hit it off.
Cardi B started the fight after, allegedly, Minaj commented on her poor parenting skills. Cardi and rapper Offset recently had their first child, so it’s likely she took offense to Minaj’s comment. The circulating video shows Cardi lunging towards Minaj and throwing her high heel. But she was quickly apprehended by Minaj’s bodyguards. In the images afterward, Cardi was seen with a visible lump on her forehead.
This wasn’t the only time she did that. At the VH1 reunion special in 2021, she threw her shoe at Azealia Banks.
The WAP Dance
WAP is Cardi’s most controversial song. We don’t need to explain what WAP stands for; you can Google that yourself. The song came out in August of 2020, and the YouTube video has 450 million views. The video itself is largely at the center of the controversy. Blood Gang
Throughout the years, famous rappers have openly admitted to being members of criminal gangs. Snoop Dogg was a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang. Although he denies it, some openly admit to his involvement. But Dogg’s involvement isn’t in any way related to crime. These gangs are known to have rappers as members, so, likely, Snoop Dogg never committed any crimes.
On the subject of Cardi B, the case is no different. She admitted to being a member of a gang known as the “Brims.” They’re allegedly a “violent bloods gang,” and Cardi was, allegedly, a member since she was 16. On a Twitter post, she said that leaving the gang was not something she could do. Although, there are no reports of Cardi ever committing any crimes with the Brims.
Being Cheated On
Being married to rapper Offset didn’t turn out a great move for Cardi. Not only did he cheat on her, but there were allegations that he made a naughty tape. Cardi retaliated with a song, “Be Careful,” where the lyrics mention he needs to be careful or he’ll lose her. He did eventually lose her, but fans were disappointed in the way she reacted. In an Instagram post, Cardi was calm and showed Offset a lot of love, which is strange for someone who cheats on you and also makes a naughty tape. Fans were quick to point out that her poor statement gave women a bad reputation.
